The year is almost up, and yet again, our Record of the Month Club has been bringing the hits all year long. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
We started the year off with an unreleased Irma Thomas LP from our pals at Mississippi Records featuring early Irma. Next up, in February, we had MJ Lenderman swing by the shop and sign copies of his crazy-good record, Manning Fireworks (Anti). In March, we slowed things down with the elegant, mesmerizing instrumental soundtrack to the film Old Joy (Mississippi Records) by indie stalwarts Yo La Tengo. Then in April, while getting ready for Record Store Day and Double Decker, we sent out the very chill Tabe (RVNG Intl.) by Japanese artist Satomimagae. To start off the hot summer, we picked The Fun of Watching Fireworks (Numero Group)–the underrated 1990’s slow-core rocker from the American Analog Set out of Austin, TX. Then, in June, we selected one of our favorite albums of the year; Pulp’s More (Matador Records). Pulp summer, baby! To round out the summer, for July, we sent out the 30th anniversary of CeDell Davis’s classic Fat Possum Records release, Feel Like Doing Something Wrong, pressed on blue vinyl. For August, we picked the final studio album, Broken Homes and Gardens (No Quarter), by folkie traveller, Michael “Snock” Hurley. The summer heat lingers in Mississippi, so in September, we sent out Swamp Dogg’s latest album, Blackgrass (Oh Boy Records), which he signed copies of while stopping by our shop in Jackson, Mississippi during the Mississippi Book Festival. October’s selection is the vibe we all need right now and it’s shipping out soon. The album is a new compilation from our pals at the Jazz Dispensary label, Dream a Dream with Studio G: Cratedigger’s Archive (1970–2009).
All killer, no filler.
